In full general, if a sentinel has to screw-upwards either the ramp into the interval or the recovery, I'd prefer it to screw-up the recovery (as it did here). It seemed to go ameliorate though. If there's whatever takeaway of notation hither is that the Apple Watch Series iv did really good. Perhaps that new sensor design is paying off.
Notation that the build portion here was pretty practiced though for Garmin, and in fact the 1 surface area where again the Apple tree Watch does a delayed conquering of heart rate. It's so painfully obvious in all these charts with that apartment-line to brainstorm.

You can clearly encounter the 8 sets of xxx-seconds on and off within information technology. Whereas the Instinct is pondering life for the starting time one-half of the ride (it's simply a 12-minute test). What's interesting is especially the first minute or two where the Instinct actually mirrors the ups/downs of the Hr, just is heavily offset (low).

And honestly, all in all, this really isn't besides bad. I've put smoothing at 10-seconds for this chart to brand it easier to see over the elapsing of the ride, but frankly this might actually take the cake as the best optical Hour performance I've ever seen from a Garmin device on a bicycle. Only in a compression, you can use the optical Hr sensor on the Instinct devices for cycling and it'll get the general gist of things correct well-nigh of the fourth dimension.
Ultimately the optical HR sensor on the Garmin Instinct is basically the same as I've seen on other recent Garmin wearable products. I'll exist honest, when I first got the run-downwardly of these units back in Baronial I was skeptical. Would it be a crippled wannabe Fenix that didn't really suit anyone? And even going into concluding week I wasn't quite convinced. Sure, it was a fine watch in terms of general GPS tracking and such – just I wasn't sure if information technology was an odd ugly duckling.
However, last calendar week I spent some time in the Canadian Rockies and started putting the various ABC (Altimeter/Barometer/Compass) as well as related navigation features to more of a exam. And information technology's at that bespeak it becomes clear that this isn't a dorked upward Fenix, but really a very solid ABC spotter that doesn't cost every bit much as a transatlantic airline ticket. The vast bulk of outdoor/navigation features that most folks want are in this spotter, and washed in a fashion that is easy to understand.
Of course, in that location are still some weird quirks – nearly entirely software decisions that they made. I can kinda understand why they skipped on music and Garmin Pay support, and perhaps even lack of Pulse Ox. Notwithstanding, I neglect to sympathise why at least some elements of Garmin Connect IQ aren't included hither. Additionally, I don't get the same weird sport oddities like the lack of VO2Max metric or Torso Battery seen on much lower-end wearables from Garmin at half the cost or lower. Sometimes I feel like Garmin doesn't take a cohesive strategy for what features should be available at what price points. I just haven't decided if it'due south considering they've overthought it or underthought it. And so at that place's the slight GPS oddities I saw on a handful of runs in less-hard places.
Still, if y'all like the exterior styling of this watch – I suspect you'll be pretty happy with the interior features of it. It packs in a punch – and I don't believe we've seen any Garmin wearable with this many navigation/outdoor features at this low of a price point always before. Information technology even has more sport-focused features than the Vivoactive 3. Heck, if I retrieve about information technology I don't think we've e'er seen whatever article of clothing with this many software features at $300 earlier. Given the Vivoactive 3 was previously $300 and this has a boatload more than than that, the feature/function math seems pretty clearly in this unit of measurement's favor.
